Xperia S AOSP: Android 4.2 up and running, Sony continues the work

Some time ago, we indicate a project aimed at making the Xperia S from SONY as reactive updates Android than Google's Nexus range. A video posted by the developers of the Japanese shows the progress made, and as you can see, the phone is now working on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean)

As a reminder, this initiative is to the account of Jean Baptiste Queru, the Mr AOSP (Android Open Source Project), who works at Google and is in charge of monitoring the various updates mobile operating system. The purpose of this project was to prove that we could switch a high-end smartphone with a manufacturer to make it fully compatible with the latest updates of Android, as are the Nexus.

Different members come from Google to withdraw from the project since it is on track and the phone starts well on the latest version as of Android (Jelly Bean): the goal is reached. If we could assume that the experiment would stop there, it is not. Indeed, two engineers SONY resume the baby on their own and they have published in this Github different elements on which they work, and they added the source code quickly.

Note that, for the moment, seems fully functional smartphone running Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) as the various sensors and Wi-Fi are well recognized and usable. But other hardware must still undergo some changes: the modem or audio. They are indeed part of the in-house manufacturer, but Sony said on its blog that the drivers used are proprietary and they can not be published in this open source version of Android.

Remains to be seen if Sony will continue this initiative until the end, because the manufacturer has indicated that Jelly Bean (with the overlay manufacturer this time) would be deployed on the Xperia S next year .
